For your consideration today are a few scenes from 2017’s Spiderman: Homecoming.
It’s in the middle of the night that the Devil comes to visit and tells us the Truth about things. Religion has it wrong – the Devil isn’t the Father-of-Lies, the Devil never lies.
[they don’t care about us]
The Devil never lies because the Truth is too much fun. Truth can shake our foundations. Truth can drop eight tonnes of bricks on us.
I think we’ve all been in a position like this at some point in our life – metaphorically, of course. We’ve underestimated the Devil we’re currently battling and now the weight of the world is crushing us to Earth.
And no one’s coming to save us.
Up to this point, Peter has always had a little bit of outside help to pull him out of…uh…non-sticky situations…you know, since his webs are sticky and…uh…nevermind…someone’s always been there to help him. Tony Stark pulls him out of the water and keeps the ferry from sinking. The suit AI, Karen, helps Peter get into and out of all kinds of trouble. Ned saves his bacon at least once and even Donald Glover gives Peter a little guidance.
But here, buried under tonnes of rubble, with no special suit, no communication devices, no trackers, no anything, Peter is alone.
I know, yes, almost every movie these days is telling us that we all have to band together and fight the system and that your friends always got your back and that someone is always thinking of you, so you’re never truly alone.
But in the dark of the night, when the weight of the world is pressing down around you, and you’re staring into the Deep.
You are alone.
But you are not weak. You are Heroic.
[Come on, Spiderman!]
Time to stand up, Hero.
